Building a marketing strategy can sometimes feel daunting—the channels, the content, the “what to say when and where.” These challenges have existed in marketing well before today’s ever-evolving media landscape. Thankfully, there’s a simple, repeatable process for creating the ideal marketing strategy for your business: your Marketing TOTEM.
Before we break it down further, let's distinguish between tactics and strategy. Perhaps you’ve decided to beef up your TikTok page, run a digital ad campaign, or sponsor an event. These are tactics, but not strategies. It’s easy to use tactics without considering strategy; however, this approach can often be both inefficient and ineffective. Alternatively, a strong marketing strategy provides the foundation that guides every message, campaign, and investment. Determining your Marketing TOTEM helps piece it all together.
Here’s your guiding Marketing TOTEM:
Target
Outcome
Trigger
Engagement
Measurement
To help build your Marketing TOTEM, ask yourself these five questions:
1. TARGET: Who are we trying to reach? Start by clearly defining your audience. Consider their needs, challenges, motivations, and what influences their decisions.
2. OUTCOME: What action do we want them to take? Every campaign should have a purpose. Whether you're building awareness, generating leads, increasing subscriptions, or driving sales, success begins with a clear objective.
3. TRIGGER: Where are they in their buying journey? Research shows that most potential buyers aren't actively looking to purchase at any given moment (see the 95-5 Rule). Building familiarity and trust before they're ready to buy helps position your brand when demand emerges. Define the purchasing trigger to develop strategic touchpoints throughout the customer journey.
4. ENGAGEMENT: What message will matter to them right now? This is where the fun begins (aka building out the creative). Your messaging should align with your audience's current needs and mindset. Even the right message delivered at the wrong time runs the risk of falling flat.
5. MEASUREMENT: How will we measure success? Identify meaningful metrics before launching your campaign. Awareness, engagement, website traffic, leads, and conversions all tell different parts of the story.
A successful marketing strategy connects business goals, audience insights, messaging, and measurement into a cohesive plan. When those elements work together, your marketing becomes more intentional, effective, and easier to evaluate.
